We hadden natuurlijk een vrolijk hemelvaart weekeinde, maar in de USA ging Facebook IPO. Dat was een beetje een sof trouwens, maar ook dat is maar net hoe je ernaar kijkt. Hoe dan ook: Onze partner Yes2Web mocht ook een duit in het PR zakje doen en vond wat van de IPO. En dat verhaal vertelden ze over een achtergrond van de Facebook pagina van ABSOLUT.

Yesterday I was talking to a small startup company that was developing realtime social magazines. So I was thinking to myself. What!? But when you consider yourself as being online savvy, you never admit that you do not know what’s going on. Or is that just me? So I was thinking to myself ‘it’s probably flipboard, but then as a generic app’. And it was, so I am savvy after all. That is good to know, but I learned somthing new as well. A tablet is (or can be) a ‘lean back device’. Much like television and unlike a laptop. A laptop is a ‘lean forward device’ (or in my case a ‘case of humpback Quasimodo device’). A lean back device. Something to passively enjoy. Get it? Passive enjoyment is the ultimate breading ground for advertising. You can infographic me for days with beautiful graphs and you can show me the most fancy apps to show me the potential of mobile, or you could just say ‘Hey, it’s a lean back device’. That explains it.

So I was walking through a demo of this magazine app and there was a demo advertisiment. And that sucked bigtime. And I was relieved. I was facing this brilliant guy who is gonna make good money and clearly has a good app and could even see that the concept of a lean back device makes people receiptable to advertising. But for making a good ad, you need an advertising agency. Not because of the visual or the message. But because of the potential of the device. The ad I saw said: Win an Ipad and it had a beautiful picture of an Ipad below. So this one-dimensional thing was supposed to be an ad? It was probably what everyone over 13 years of age would recognise as and ad, but show it to a kid and that kid would start touching and interacting with it. Obviously that is what this ad would not do.

So that was two revelations in one day. Advertising will always be big because people will ‘lean back’ and advertising agencies will be the ones makes the great ads. Providing they can think digital.

And if you want to be great in digital, you have to be great in social and if you want to be great in social you have to be able to deliver great content. And webdesign is more than bringing your key visual to web resolution. It is about designing with the brand, the consumer, the interaction and the technical possibilities in the back of your mind. And sometimes I hear people complaining that it is too complex. But it is not!

I repeat: It-is-not. Take for instance the varieties of browsing. People use different devices, browsers and resolutions. That is not complex, it is just something you can’t control.

Good webdesign is about being able to control the experience without controlling the medium. It’s about letting go.

And that counts for all digital advertising. It’s about letting go. About being vulnerable.

Scary maybe. But not complex at all.

Yeah, okay. I agree. Brands that post relevant videos all the time on their Facebook TL get shared like crazy. So here’s a challenge for advertising budgets… have you ever made a video production under let’s say 10k? How about 5k? and then twice a week? Will you manage? I guess this means a shift in business models, because I see me advising brands to engage their fans and thus present good content - that means photo and video as well – and I have rarely seen budgets that meet that challenge. But it can be done. What you need is a good concept that is able to generate more content than you put in and creatives and techies that can work agile.

 

You need to do it just a little bit different and rethink the business you are in.

Ik wel.Gelukkig ook voordat ik vanochtend in de ontbijtshow een item hoorde over dit nieuwe sociale netwerk. Het is heel simpel: je maakt een account aan en logt meteen in met je Facebook of Twitter account. Goed gedaan, zo zijn het geen concurrenten, heb je meteen een platform om te delen en je maakt van deze platformen de facilitator van jouw concept. Had ik gelukkig ook al eerder gedaan. Met Phockr, www.phockr.nl , onze eigen social media showcase traject, waarin je dit soort dingen dus leert en ontdekt. Oke, ik had gehoopt dat het ook tot een beursgang zou komen, maar helaas, dat werd het niet.

Pinterest dus. Wat je doet is prikbordjes maken van interessante films en plaatjes. Die pin je op je bordje, door up te loaden, door te Repinnen van andere bordjes (die je kan volgen) of door de knop die je in je browserbalk zet en waarop staat: Pin It!

Waarom is dit leuk? Ja, zoals altijd moet je dat eigenlijk meteen aanvoelen, want als ik het je moet uitleggen, denk je waarschijnlijk ‘pfffff, wat nu weer, moet ik dan de hele dag plaatjes gaan zoeken? Waarom, ik heb wel wat  beters te doen’. Dus voor die mensen: ga alsjeblieft wat beters doen.

Voor de rest van de mensen: die verzamelingen of prikbordjes werken heel inspiratief. Heb je bijvorbeeld een webwinkel, dan kan je daar leuke etalages van maken. Er zijn ook speciale gift-pinboardjes. En zoals ik al vaak zeg tegen onze retailklanten: online moet je zoveel mogelijk etalages creëren. Dat werkt goed en dit is een kans op een etalages. En dan even non commercieel: ik bewaar daar gewoon m’n infographics en ook allerlei leuke plaatjes.

Vergeet alle richtlijnen, wijze vragen of gewonnen prijzen! Als je wilt weten of je van doen hebt met echte tech entrepeneur, ofwel techy. Mensen dus die de toekomst boetseren en weten hoe de wereld van morgen in elkaar steekt (ook in de reclame hoor!). Kijk dan niet naar hun blauwe pak, versleten kleding of beany mutsje, want dan heb je van doen met ouderwetse idioten! Alles draait om de sokken.

Dus nu heb ik Path geïnstalleerd. Dat is met vrienden dingen delen. Je zal bij jezelf denken dat je dat niet hoeft omdat je al Facebook hebt. Maar goed, op FB heb je natuurlijk allerlei mensen die je vrienden noemt, maar die het fotoverslag van de bevalling van je eerste kind nou net niet hoeven zien. Path is dus eigenlijk een gebaand pad voor bepaalde mensen. Dus what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas en kan je alleen delen met mensen op je Vegas Path.

Snap je wel?

Naja, misschien zit je gewoon nog op Hyves en denk je dat vrienden mensen zijn die je elke dag tegenkomt en waar je gesprekken mee voert ofzo. Zoals vroeger. Zo vond ik laatst nog het fossiel van een vriend tussen de kussens van de bank, van een keer dat we samen de wedstrijd keken. Zal ik zo ff een fotootje van twitteren.

Path dus. Waar vrienden weer echt vrienden worden.
